DON’T SUFFER FROM NECK PAIN ANY LONGER, CLICK HERE TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT TODAY!
Are you sick of sitting at your desk all day with that constant ache in your neck? Have you been seeing a physio, chiro or the likes for years with only short lasting results? Well, following on from last weeks blog on the thoracic spine, today we unravel some of the possible causes of your neck pain.
Neck pain, without an acute incident is unlikely the result of a significant injury such as a disc bulge and it certainly doesn’t mean that a joint in your neck is out of alignment. The likely cause of your pain is bio-mechanical dysfunction, which means certain muscles are overactive (tight), while other muscles are under-active (weak).
The exact cause, type and location of the pain is always unique to each individual, which means there is no single ‘fix’ for all neck pain. Given that the exact cause of your pain can be quite complicated, it is important that a thorough assessment is undertaken by your physiotherapist to ensure any underlying issues are addressed
Neck pain is extremely common for people who spend prolonged time sitting in front of computer screens in pushing positions (arms forward). As we discussed last week, these prolonged postures create an increase in tension of your chest muscles, and a weakness or reduced capacity in your back and shoulder muscles and can make you feel very uncomfortable. This results in a sub-optimal resting position for your neck and mid back, putting excessive pressure on your neck muscles and joints!

In many cases it’s the larger muscles of your neck (the upper trapezius and levator scapulae muscle) that become overworked, resulting in tension and pain. For those of you who go for a massage every four weeks, these are the muscles that your therapists are ‘releasing.’ However, if you’re not completing exercises that work to develop strength in the muscles of the mid back and shoulders, your not addressing the likely source of your symptoms, which is why your pain keeps recurring!
